It’s A Life Changing Experience

Without caring mentors, positive youth development just doesn’t happen. At The First Tee, we take coaching seriously. We believe that a meaningful, quality relationship between coach and participant is vital to our program.

We currently have more than 3,700 coaches signed up with The First Tee, including PGA and LPGA pros, as well as volunteers. But you don’t have to be a golf pro or even a good golfer. With The First Tee Coach Program, we provide the training you need.

Developed with input from leading experts in the field of positive youth development, our program focuses on empowering participants through decision-making and exploring options. This helps foster positive relationships between coaches and young people, inspiring the golfers of tomorrow to look to the future, set goals, and unlock their potential.

Coaches working through The First Tee Coach Program choose their own level of involvement. The program includes the following levels:

  • Assistant Coach
  • The First Tee Coach-in-Training (Level I, II, III)
  • The First Tee Coach
  • The First Tee Master Coach

We need more than coaches to make The First Tee possible. Our chapters rely on volunteers — sometimes year-round — to accomplish our mission, and not all of those goals involve golf. Most chapters need support off the course as well. These opportunities include:

  • Fundraising/Events
  • Operations/Administration
  • Mentoring/Tutoring
  • In-school program support

By contributing your time and talent, you can directly make an impact in a child’s life.

The first tee of the coachella valley

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with The First Tee of The Coachella Valley, a program of The Desert Recreation District. The benefits of becoming a volunteer can be life changing! To become a volunteer with our local program, we ask that you complete the following steps:

Step 1:

Complete, sign and return the Volunteer Application (download the volunteer packet below). Drop off the application at The First Tee of The Coachella Valley, 74-945 Sheryl Ave., Palm Desert, CA 92260 or fax the paperwork to us at 760-341-7369.

Step 2:

All volunteers are required to attend a volunteer training session. The staff member reviewing your application will schedule your training session that best fits your availability.

Step 3:

During your training, you will be asked to complete a screening process, which may include an interview about your skills and interests, a criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting process) and character references. You will also receive training about your volunteer role, behavioral expectations, and child protection.

Volunteer training dates

As a volunteer coach, we only ask for a small amount of your time.  During an 8-week session, your commitment can be as little as 2 hours per week, however attendance to one training session is mandatory. During the training there will be hand-on education along with snacks and drinks. Here is the Volunteer training schedule for 2019-2020:
